So why Sonic now? I spent some time thinking about this as I watched the movie and came to the conclusion it was the perfect time for a Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Those of us that grew up playing Sonic on our SEGA Game Gear's and SEGA Genesis systems now have kids playing Sonic on their devices. As soon as the movie began, I felt a twinge of nostalgia at the excitement of seeing one of my favorite childhood games come to life on the big screen.

But Sonic the Hedgehog is more than just nostalgia. The storyline is sweet while also being action-packed. Viewers find Sonic relocated to Earth in order to save himself from creatures trying to steal his power on his home planet. While one Earth, Sonic is in hiding in a small Montana town. Even though he can't let others see him, he is busy living vicariously through his "friends" - enter Tom (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter). When Sonic creates a power surge that knocks out power and he needs a safe place to hide, he turns to his friend Tom. But Sonic has the best name ever for Tom, Donut Lord. I'm telling you, if I ever become a superhero, I only hope for a name that cool. As a small town sheriff, Tom has always longed for action and the chance to save a life - he just didn't expect that life would be that of a small, blue creature from another planet. In the most unlikely of friendships, Tom takes Sonic under his wing to protect him from the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). A road trip ensues and the two friends help mark items off of Sonic's "bucket list" before he leaves Earth forever. Tom makes sacrifices for Sonic. Sonic makes sacrifices for Tom. Maddie makes sacrifices for Tom. In the end it's all about lifting up those that you love and supporting them through the good times. . .and the bad.
You may have heard of the overhaul that happened to Sonic the Hedgehog after the first teaser images/trailer were released. Kudos to Paramount Pictures for listening to the fans and giving Sonic a makeover (he looks like he does in the trailer below, not like some previous pictures you may have seen). I feel like this is the case throughout the movie. It's a movie that is fun for fans of the video game - both young and old. And I'm not going to spoil anything, but stick around for the end credits. This franchise may just be getting started - and I'm here for all of it!

Is Sonic the Hedgehog Kid-Friendly?
I found Sonic the Hedgehog to be very kid-friendly for my boys. There is a scene that takes place in bar and features the classic "bar fight" scene which may be sensitive content for some parents to show their kids, but the fight scene is mild by most comparisons. The movie held the attention of both of my boys (ages 5 and 8) while we were in the theater and they each belly laughed through multiple scenes. There really is no language to be concerned about and the "evil" Dr. Robotnik is not too much for the youngest viewers to handle. While everyone has a different standard they look at kids movies through to judge whether they are appropriate for their kids, this is one I think the whole family can enjoy together.

The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
